History

Barauni emerged as one of the principal industrial regions of Bihar during the 1960s. The period saw the establishment of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Barauni Refinery, the Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation (HFC) and the Barauni Thermal Power Station (BTPS), together with a number of small and medium scale industrial units. These industries created a sustained demand for technically trained manpower in the region. To meet this requirement and to promote technical education in the state, the Government of Bihar established Government Polytechnic, Barauni vide Bihar Government Order No. 7102 dated 31st July 1964. The institute began with limited infrastructure and a single diploma programme in Civil Engineering. Its location within the Barauni industrial belt placed it in close proximity to the industries it was intended to serve. Over the following decades, the institute expanded its academic offerings, developed its physical infrastructure and strengthened its laboratories and technical facilities in keeping with the changing requirements of industry and technical education. Through this process, it has come to be recognised as one of the established polytechnic institutions of Bihar. The growth of the institute has followed three broad lines. First, new diploma programmes were introduced in response to the needs of the regional industries and the wider technological environment. Second, the campus infrastructure was progressively developed to support the growing intake and the additional programmes. Third, the laboratories and technical resources were modernised to keep the training relevant to contemporary industrial practice. At present, the institute offers diploma programmes in five disciplines:

3. Electronics Engineering
4. Computer Science and Engineering
5. Fire Technology and Safety
Government Polytechnic, Barauni continues to work towards improving its academic programmes, infrastructure and technical resources so that its graduates remain well prepared for the needs of industry.
